Live results

Plain text only. Paste from PDF or the web can hide extra characters-if totals look wrong, paste through a plain editor first.

Counts stay in this tab; use Copy summary when you need plain-text totals in tickets or docs.

Your live counts will show here.

Word total is largest; then characters, unique words, reading time, and top words. Updates in your browser-no upload.

Length & format benchmarks

Use these as sense checks while you edit-not rigid rules. Every app counts characters and “words” a little differently.

  • Blog posts: ~800-2,000 words is a common full-article band before you split into a series.
  • SEO explainers: ~1,000-2,500 words when you need depth, headings, and internal links without filler.
  • Social: ~100-300 characters for a tight single post; threads need clear breaks.
  • Academic abstracts: often ~150-300 words-always match the venue PDF.

What this is for

Use Word Counter when you need one calm screen for words, characters both ways, reading time, and top words before you paste into Docs, a CMS, or a tight character cap.

  • Ship faster: totals refresh on every keystroke-no round trip
  • Pair with Character counter or Text length when the form cares about bytes vs graphemes
  • Pair with Reading time or Keyword density when pacing or SEO matter
  • Use Copy summary (or CSV/Excel/PDF) when stakeholders need the same numbers you see

Remember: Editors normalize smart quotes and hidden breaks-this page counts exactly what is in the box.

Bookmark this page-most writers open a word counter many times a week. One tab beats hunting through five apps.

Built for real drafts

Use it before you paste into Google Docs, Word, Notion, or a CMS-every platform counts a little differently. Here you see exactly what is in the box, refreshed live, with no server round-trip.

Students, editors, SEOs, support teams, and social managers all need the same thing: fast truth on length. That is what this page is for.

How it works

  1. Paste or type in Your text. Live results update instantly (side-by-side on wide screens, stacked on mobile).
  2. Read the large words total first, then characters, unique words, sentences, lines, paragraphs, reading time, avg length, and Top words (panel is always visible; ranks fill in as you type).
  3. Use the gray What this means / Next box under the stats, then Copy summary for plain text-or CSV / Excel / PDF under that button for file exports of the live counts.

What each metric means

  • Words - split on whitespace; multiple spaces between words still count as one gap.
  • Characters / no spaces - match Twitter-style vs “letters only” limits in other apps.
  • Unique words - vocabulary breadth; pairs with Word frequency.
  • Lines & paragraphs - lines use newlines; paragraphs are blocks split by a blank line.
  • Sentences - split on . ? !; may differ from Word on abbreviations.
  • Min read - ~200 words per minute; tune with Reading time if you need another speed.

Quick tips

Re-count after messy paste. For strict legal or school limits, confirm the venue’s rules. If Copy summary fails, click the page once and retry-some browsers block the clipboard until you interact. Explore Character counter, Keyword density, all text tools, or the full catalog.

Privacy: Your paste is not sent to us for counting; it stays in this tab until you reload, clear, or copy it yourself.
