Line Counter Online - Live Lines, Blank Rows & Reading Time
Paste logs, lists, or verse. The hero stays on total lines (real line breaks, not soft wrap), with empty vs filled rows, character context, structure, read time, and longest line. Export with Copy report when you need the numbers elsewhere.
Line counter input and results
Total lines, blank vs filled rows, character context, words when present, structure, read time, averages, and longest-line preview-all keyed to real line breaks in your paste.
1 Paste or type · 2 Edit · 3 Live line stats · 4 Copy report
Live results
Lines follow newline characters in what you paste, not soft-wrapped rows from Word or the browser. Rows that are empty or whitespace-only count as empty but still land in the total.
Counts stay in this tab until you reload or clear; Copy report moves the metrics out.
Your line stats will show here.
The big number is total lines (one per newline in your paste, not per wrapped row elsewhere). Whitespace-only rows count as empty but stay in the total. Characters, read time, and longest line update with your text.

Length & format benchmarks
Use these as sense checks while you edit-not rigid rules. Every app counts characters and “words” a little differently.
- Blog posts: ~800-2,000 words is a common full-article band before you split into a series.
- SEO explainers: ~1,000-2,500 words when you need depth, headings, and internal links without filler.
- Social: ~100-300 characters for a tight single post; threads need clear breaks.
- Academic abstracts: often ~150-300 words-always match the venue PDF.

What this is for
Reach for Line Counter when you need honest row counts from newline characters-before diffs, CSV checks, poetry layout, or quoting “how many lines” in a ticket.
- Audit blank spacer rows in logs or imports
- Compare line totals after merge or reflow
- Pair with Add line numbers when you need numbered rows
- Use Remove duplicate lines after you know the raw count
Remember: Only line breaks in the paste count-visual wrapping in another app does not add rows.
Bookmark this page-devs and writers sanity-check line counts daily. One tab beats juggling three utilities.
Built for logs, lists, and verse
Every platform wraps text visually; this tool counts real line breaks in what you paste-ideal before you diff files, quote row counts, or prep CSV. All metrics refresh locally with no server round-trip.
How it works
- Paste or type in Your text. Live results update instantly (side-by-side on wide screens, stacked on mobile).
- Read the large lines total first, then non-empty vs empty, characters, words, structure, reading time, and longest line.
- Use the gray What this means / Next box under the stats, then Copy report to export plain-text metrics.
What each metric means
- Lines - split on newline (
\n); Windows\r\nstill yields one break per row in most pastes. - Empty - whitespace-only rows after trim; included in total so you can audit spacing.
- Paragraphs / sentences - same rules as Sentence counter; useful when prose has hard line breaks.
- Reading time - ~200 wpm from words; tune with Reading time.
- Longest line - raw character length of the longest row (great for wide log fields).
Privacy: Your paste is not uploaded for counting; it stays in this tab until you reload, clear, or copy it yourself.
